About Us

IT Consulting Since 2002

Briggs IT Services was started out of an obsession with all things technology. In 1981 while still in grade school I decided to ‘fix’ my fathers’ Smith Corona Electric typewriter. I had learned my letters in school and clearly whoever made the typewriter did not have this basic knowledge. I proceeded to remove the keys from the typewriter and reattach them in the ‘correct’ order. When this was not entirely successful, I used Elmer’s Wood Glue to complete the task. Unfortunately, my father was not pleased with my work and not pleased with me. From that time, he and I began to obtain non-functioning technology from local Radio Shack stores and work to repair them. In December 1981 we as a family bought our first computer a Tandy Radio Shack Color Computer Model 80 (TRS-80). I knew from that moment that computers were going to become my career.

Fast forward to 1991, I graduated from high school and proceeded on to college, first for a degree in Computer Science (where I learned I was NOT a programmer), then for a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology (where I learned I was NOT good with a soldering iron.). In 1995 I married and through a family friend I found Ray who was ‘doing’ what I wanted to do for a career. I proceeded to become his assistant (slave). We had a deal where I would do projects for him, he didn’t have time for and if I could complete the job without his help, I could keep all the money but if I asked him for ANY help, it cost me HALF! I learned a lot working for and with him.

In 2002 I had the opportunity to move to Indianapolis and take my first real IT job, doing onsite warranty repair for Dell. I started out repairing desktop and laptop computers but in 2005 I was promoted to work on commercial Server and EMC Storage equipment. This job was great, but it involved long hours and A LOT of driving. I drove 308,000 in 2.5 years and ‘killed’ a perfectly good Chevrolet Impala. I stayed with this job until 2008 when we moved back to Syracuse NY, and I took a job for an IT helpdesk company servicing AT&T internet. It was there I learned how to communicate and work remotely. I also learned a great deal about virus removal. I moved from there to Time-Warner Cable providing business internet support (and selling their other products). I stayed there until moving to Houston in 2012 to work for my old friend and mentor Ray.

During this job I gained the experience in working on a variety of projects for all types of companies. I learned how to work remotely on multiple types of systems and most importantly how routine (boring) maintenance is critical to computer systems because many problems can be detected and resolved without any downtime on a company’s part. In 2016, I left this job to start my own company. I felt that on my own I could provide better, more responsive service without treating customers like a nuisance. I felt like the industry standard of holding client hostage was wrong and vowed to do better. And I have.

Why choose us

Technology trends continue evolving and can be a real challenge for businesses. Sometimes it seems that the rate of change is so fast that even as a company adopts new technology, things change again and now it’s outdated. With technology trends changing so quickly, it is important to have someone like Jim Briggs and the team at Briggs IT Services there to help with growth and change management. It can be tempting to follow the mantra “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”, but that philosophy has a myriad of potential risks.
